Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is an x-ray technique that, in conjunction with
oral and IV contrast, helps diagnose problems with the bowel,
kidneys, gallbladder, stomach, upper GI and joints. This technique
uses small amounts of x-ray.
Procedures and preparation:
Barium Swallow - No special preparation.
Upper GI Series – Patient must be NPO at least
six hours before this exam, preferably after midnight.
Barium Enema - Follow the 24-hour bowel prep in
fleet #2. In addition, do not eat or drink after midnight
the night before the exam.
Barium Enema with air contrast - Follow 48-hour
bowel prep in fleet #2. In addition, do not eat or drink after
midnight the night before the exam.
IVP - Follow the 24-hour prep in the bowel prep
fleet #2. In addition, do not eat or drink after midnight
the night before the exam.
If you think you may be pregnant, please inform your
physician or the technologist before your exam.
If you have a known contrast allergy, please contact
your physician or the imaging location where you are having
your exam as soon as possible.
Post-exam instructions:
You can resume normal activities right away. If you have ingested
barium, please drink more water than usual. Water will help
relieve any constipation you may have after this exam. Additionally,
if you have had barium with your exam, your stool may appear
white or light for a day or two. If you have received an injection
with your exam, your body will naturally pass it in a day.

15-60 minutes
Results turn-around time:
A radiologist will interpret your exam and transcribed report
will be available to the ordering physician within 24 hours.
